Images and Narrative: Restructured Books, Maps & Text - SOLD OUT

Saturday 18 September - Sold Out (waiting list only)

with Cas Holmes

In this workshop, you will use old books, maps and printed materials as a starting point to create a new work. The book/map you use will direct the content and processes from layering and cutting techniques through to stitch, dye and print. You will look at making small personal works with narrative, meaning, heart and humour. Cas will demonstrate many low-tech methods for transforming raw materials and found objects into textile art. Simple drawings, cutting, pasting, stitching and collage will be the primary tactics to turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Cost: £50 (£45 concessions & Friends of Farfield) - or £90 (£80) if booked with Cas Holmes' workshop, Text, Paper & Image, on Sun 19 Sept

Text, Paper and Image

Sunday 19 September

with Cas Holmes

During this workshop, you will explore text and image as a means of visual communication. Working on paper and limited fabric scraps, the course looks at the use of found materials for rubbings, stenciling, print and the use of text, image and writing both as a design element and as a means for informing work and developing new ideas. You’ll explore ideas relating to personal collections and memorabilia as a starting point for developing themes.

Cost: £50 (£45 concessions & Friends of Farfield) - or £90 (£80) if booked with Cas Holmes' workshop, Images and Narrative: Restructured Books, Maps & Text, on Sat 18 Sept

Rags to Riches: a Contemporary Approach to Rag Rugs

Saturday 16 October

with Lynne Stein

During this one-day workshop, you will learn and use hooked and prodded rag rug techniques, as well as seeing demonstrations and samples of other related and compatible textile techniques to include within your work. There will be an emphasis during the day upon creating sample areas, and lots of experimental work. You may also work on a specific project, and perhaps incorporate some of these ideas. The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience.

Cost: £70 (£63 Concessions and Friends of Farfield). Equipment and materials for the workshop are specified in the 'Information for Participants' - if these are purchased from the tutor, they need to be ordered before 2 October (through Farfield Mill).

Creative Contemporary Knitting

Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October

with Ruth Lee

During this hands-on, practical workshop, you'll work towards producing small sculptural pieces of textile artwork which could be framed and wall hung, or displayed in an outdoor environment. You will knit around small pieces of either natural form or man-made objects (or both) using knitting to make changes to the appearance of that object – revealing some or all or none of the object’s true identity. We will be knitting from first principles, ditching the pattern, and working with any number of yarns, fibres and other flexible linear materials.

"Think of it as taking the yarns and fibres for a 'creative walk' using knitting needles, working in the same way you would if you were making a drawing or collage from scratch. Free form creative knitting, with structure and a purpose." Ruth Lee

Cold Enamel and Resin in Jewellery Making

Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February 2011

with Clare John

During this workshop, Clare John will be showing how to add brilliant colour to jewellery using different resins and cold enamels with no need for expensive equipment. On the first day, you will learn how to mix resin accurately and safely, apply it as cold enamel, embed photos and pictures and experiment with different ways of colouring resin. On the second day, you will cast resin into a one-part mould, add more layers of colour, add a domed layer to the first pieces and discuss the use of gel resin in rings.

Clare John has been making jewellery since graduating in 1976 from Middlesex Polytechnic and has been teaching and demonstrating resin for six years.

"I love adding vibrant colour to jewellery and resin is now so easy and safe to use - it has changed so much since I first used it. There are fantastic new special effect resins which can create wonderful pieces. Every time I teach a workshop, I'm thrilled with the work that participants create." Clare John

Cost: £75 (£67.50 concessions & Friends of Farfield) + materials (approx. £8)
